Next Door Neighbors

There's some exciting news in the neighborhood -- guess what's opening up right next-door to Yarnia? A DIY clothing boutique! (I know, how perfect, right?) They're having their grand opening next Wednesday, October 1, and we're so excited to have them as our neighbors!

The name of the store is Neon Threads, and they specialize in custom clothing and silkscreen, jewelry, vintage consignment, and Internet trading.

Note to local designers and artists: they're accepting consignment!

Come check them out one week from today and help us welcome them to what we should soon start calling DIY Corner!

DIY and its Many Forms

One day to go until the Knit & Crochet Show! This has meant a lot of late nights and early mornings at the store as we wind, wind, wind...100 new blends to share with you this weekend!

Although we've been making all this new yarn in a variety of weights -- from fingering and sock weight all the way up to bulky -- they'll all be sold on 4-ounce or 8-ounce cones, and are in lots of at least three, so you'll be sure to have enough for just about any project you can dream up.

As it winds, the machine requires a watchful eye to make sure none of the strands snap or end, but given that this only happens every few cones, that's left a lot of empty time to occupy as I watch these endless cones being born...

Thus far I've made it over halfway through Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, which I'm totally smitten by. I'm a die-hard Michael Pollan fan, as I'm sure many other food politics buffs are, and until now I've heralded The Omnivore's Dilemma as more or less my bible. I had been putting off Kingsolver's tribute to locavorism with the thought that it would be Pollan's thesis but in different words. Which, actually, it sort of is, but it is amazing and so worth the read, whether you already support a revolt against the corporate industrial food chain or not.

While keeping the pesky strand of rayon within my peripheral vision, I actually found myself tearing up at the description of her first home cheesemaking class. As a DIY foodie who -- no matter how busy my schedule is -- still makes sure that the house is stocked with homemade butter, bread, yogurt, cheese, and kombucha, I couldn't help but smile at her remembered awe, that this food we have been trained to only recognize as coming in one singular type of package is something that can be so easily made in our own kitchens. The words of her book have hung close to 150 pounds of your yarn thus far, which I think is felicitous testament to the fact that yarn is but one of so many things that can be DIY.

See you at the show!

Knit & Crochet Show

If you haven't already heard, Portland is host this year to the national Knit & Crochet Show, which will be coming to the Oregon Convention Center the weekend of September 12th-14th! We'll be there of course, booth #313, with tons of new blends that are in the works right now. Gearing up for the fall we're dreaming up blends with Italian wool, mohair, bamboo, alpaca...

If you haven't gotten a chance yet to check out the store in person, we'll have lots of information at our booth about how the store works, what the yarn looks and feels like, samples knitted up with Yarnia yarn, and over 100 blends (including a bargain basket!) for you to enjoy. Plus, we'll be giving away fun Yarnia swag to the first 75 customers at our booth.

Find out more about the Knit & Crochet Show at their website and we'll see you there that weekend!
